Shaping the Future of Mathematics and AI: Professor Moyo Opens the Workshop

Stellenbosch University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Cebisa Moyo, opened the Dynamical Systems Theory and Modelling with AI Workshop with a strong message on collaboration, curiosity, and scientific purpose.
Addressing participants from South Africa, Thailand, Greece, and beyond, she highlighted the value of bringing mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists into one room to solve difficult problems together.

Why This Workshop Matters
Professor Moyo emphasised that dynamical systems and differential equations underpin models used in areas ranging from wave dynamics and ecosystems to financial systems, epidemiology, and neural networks.
She noted that the programme bridges classical mathematics, including Lie symmetries, with modern AI and machine learning methods, reflecting Stellenbosch University’s expanding strengths across both domains.

She encouraged students and researchers to ask hard questions about impact:
Why are you doing what you’re doing? What knowledge are you adding?
Her message was clear: impactful research grows from intellectual depth, international partnerships, and active interdisciplinary exchange.
Building Community
Professor Moyo acknowledged the organisers, postdoctoral fellows, international speakers, and visiting scholars helping grow the local and global community around symmetries, differential equations, and mathematical modelling.
